Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Door Sill Resto

The door sills are exposed when you open the doors.  They are scuff plates that lay flat on the entry way and then roll over the body lip and into the passenger compartment.

What with the attitude Doc?   I just shared what I did????

Mine where in better than average shape, tarnished and greasy.

  But...

Yes, You can remove the pits and corrosion and blend them in just fine by buffing.
I did a set of javelin sills a few months ago with 4 different compounds.  And that was "Serious" work.   Dings and dents where pounded out with a leather hammer.

I do buffing and polsihing on the side.  Unless theres huge scratches I usually dont break out the sand paper.

Good for you. And what did you do about the dings and dent's, corrosion
pits and deep scratches that would not be removed by your polishing?
Lacquer thinner removes all the dirt in 5 minutes. I removed 90% of the
above problems. Unless yours were in exceptional condition a nice shine
will not hide the above mentioned defects, only serious work like I
mentioned. I would still would have bought new repo one's if they were
available.

I soaked mine for two days in soap water to loosen the dirt I couldnt blow off with the air hose.  I then used a old paint brush to get the gunk out of the nooks and crannies.    Then I bolted the sill down to my work bench and used a craftsman buffing head in my 1/8th air grinder I used white rouge.

Took about 20 minutes each and they look.....well better than new:)

What a PIA this job is. After almost 30 hours on one I am just starting
the sanding with 1000# sand paper and hope to be finished with that
today and them move to the crocus cloth. Since due to the weather
tomorrow here in the north east I will be stuck in the house and will
probably finish all the sanding. I will try polishing the finished one
by hand but if I am not satisfied I will giv e it to my friend who at his
shop polished out and detailed the orange car and let him polish it out.
The way the first one is starting to look compared to the one just
washed with lacquer thinner makes me think I will be pleased with the
finished product. Although I will still piss and moan about how much
time and labor it took. I have a new disposable camera Frank and will
take before and after pic's.
