John here is a older article from Popular Mechanics: http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/sub_care_sat/1272426.html which might help. I have also used the "face car towards sun with windows up" method and 99% of the time all without any lasting residue. On the glass mounted mirrors, not sure when AMC started this but my 74 Hornet Sportabout wagon has glass mounted mirror. The spacer you are asking about sits between the center upper windshield trims pieces, and is held in place by two screws. AMC Part Number 3661500. I'll send you a photo.
