You better make sure what block you have in the rocker area. There was a bridged rocker motor and a shaft rocker motor in 74. The rockers were oiled differently and the heads are not interchangeable unless you run an external oil line. My yellow car a late 73 258 built 74 has the shaft rockers and my orange car a late 258 74 build has bridged rockers. I use brake clean and a wire brush to clean parts. rebuild and re-assembly, I want to paint the head instead of leaving
it greasy/oily metal. I bought some metallic gold engine paint ( Since
the car IS gold, or bronze, I figured I'd customize it rather than
paint it the orginal Turqoise color ). So, will Brake Cleaner do the
trick for stripping the oily residue off the head, and leave a non-
residue finish for the paint to stick to? I believe that's what I
remember from asking last year when I thought I might get to it , but
couldn't. The head is currently off the block, it's a rebuilt 3-angle
valve '83 head going on a '74 block. I have an Edelbrock valve cover
to fit it, too. And an aluminum intake with 4-bbl mounting. So this
little '74 should scoot when I'm done with it. :)
But, let's not get ahead ( ahem! LOL ) of myself...cleaning the
head, and painting. Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks,
Jerry , itching in Virginia to get started ... and finished!
