258 starting woes. carb fire!

I've been trying to restart my Spirit after installing a new head,
cam, header, intake and modifying the ignition. I can get it to crank
and spark but it won't start. I'm guessing it's a timing issue. I
just tried starting it and flames came out the top of the carb and it
was on fire for maybe 10 seconds. What went wrong? Could there be
permanent damage? What can I do to start my car?
