You should not have that much trouble getting the heads off. Go back and check to make sure you have all the head bolts out. If it had as much gunk built up in it as you told us, it's possible that there is still one or two still burried in there..........specially in the lower corners. If all the bolts are out, a light tap or a pry with a large screwdriver should get them off.
