Re: [BaadAssGremlins] Stupid question about front drum brakes

Rick,
My bad. You are 100% correct. I was under the influence of percs.
I had surgery on my nose. Please excuse my mistake.

Be nice I :) dont have a repair manual. 1st time with amc frontends.

The front drums do not come off the same as the rear. The drum is riveted onto the hub and must be removed as a unit.

Remove the small dust cover from the center of the drum. It keeps trash out of the wheel bearings. There should be a cotter pin through the center of the spindle and castle nut. Once it is out, remove the the nut. Jiggle the drum from side to side and the bearing will pop out along with the washer. The drum should then come off.

Another little trick..........once you remove the outer bearings, put the castle nut back on by just a couple of threads. Grab the brake drum and pull on it till it rest against the nut. Now yank on it to pull it off............the inner bearings and seal should come out of the hub and stay on the spindle.

Good luck.

Rick
