Will check the fuel filter today, but usually run two fuel filters on my AMCs, one lower before fuel pump, other up near carb.

Have not checked out timing chain, but if you listen to the video, if revved slightly it pops louder, but this too could be issue, thanks for this advise.

It sounds like the timing chain my have jumped a tooth. If it has many miles on it. The timing chain may be getting sloppy.

Sorry to hear the noise -a broken rocker arm or bent pushrod I am pretty sure but lobe off cam possible. Have seen pushrod stuck thru valve also.

I'm hoping this not major work, but this morning will take car to my mechanic around corner to have him check it out. Thanks for all the replies.

distributor cap, no effect, checked all spark plug wires and vac lines, nothing. Apears to be 'deeper' in engine, somewhere around 2nd cylinder from front though. Thanks for continued replies.

Eddie; most of your inspections of electrical possibilities are easy visuals. Don't forget the wiring around and in the distributor. Mechanical

 causes are going to be in the intake portation of the value train. Your first test would be a compression test for a  burnt value. Low compression on one cylinder will point you to the cylinder with the problem. With good compression ,pull the value cover visual check of springs, then with a remote starter switch [ called wife son or daughter] pull coil wire rotate the motor and watch the operation of the value springs. cracked or broken springs may not show up sitting still. Also watch highth of rocker arms for bent push rod. Last would be bring #1 cylinder holding your thunb or finger over the spark plug hole feeling for max compression and check rocker arm position in the fireing order. You can take a soft face hammer and tap the edge of the top of the value spring and you should get the same reaction and sound from each one. If none of this works jack up the radiator and change the car.

I would do exactly what you are planning Eddie. I would change out the distributor, adjust the carb and check out the vacuum leaks. If all this doesn't fix it then I think Tom is right you have a valve problem. Just went through this with my Explorer.
