Hi Doc, yes and no. There were indeed limits on how much one could purchase,
but it depended on what part of the country I guess. Here in Texas (Corpus
Christi where I was living) you could fill up your tank, up to 20 gallons.
We used to take gas cans (wasn't supposed to!) with us and fill up the
Rambler first, and if any left over put in can. Stupid I guess, but those of
ya'll living in Gulf coast states know this is sort of a hurricane mentality
morphed with gas crisis back then...we used same tactic with Celia Aug 3rd
1970 for weeks afterwards. And few gas stations were open to boot.
I can't comment on commercial trucks and rigs, and I can't even tell you
what the OPEC gas crisis was about, probably Arabs pissed at us again for
some reason I think. But I remember some of the repercussions back then like
the car lots flooding with big cars, gas guzzlers tough to sell. Some
however, still wanted their Trans Ams!
