=============
Paul,
Yea, like I haven't heard THAT before! <he he> :)
And it truly is a curse. I am NEVER satisfied with work I do,
and am only rarely impressed by work I've paid others to do.
I spot the one rivet or bolt not fully seated...the slightly-off
door jamb...etc, etc. It's a big part of why, so often, I abandon
my own projects...then slip right into another that I've fooled
myself into thinking I'll finish to my own eyes' standards.
Last summer I hit a show and met up with a fellow whos
car had been judged at an AMO met as being nearly faultless (and
it truly is a beautiful car). I then asked if the judges noticed
the extra holes in his bumper (former trailer hitch), the
incorrect repro emissions sticker or the mis-matched paint on
the rear wheel well edges. He stated they didn't mark these
issues as a problem. Clearly, nobody wants me judging...except
maybe the guy who is similarly stricken and wants to be sure he
hasn't missed anything.
I'm not saying I know 'it all', even about the more 'stock' AMCs I
prefer. But what I do know instantly jumps out at me when its
not quite right...and then my mind won't drop it. After seing many
cars in person that I'd previously drooled over when I saw them
in magazines, I now look at even the magazines very differently...
hunting for any hints of the photo-shop work that has rendered the
car 'perfect' in print...knowing well that, in person, there are
likely numerous (granted, minor) problems.
Nothing is worse that craving perfection and having a wallet that
can't even begin to come close. I've spent the whole winter staring
at my police Javelin, unable to make any real progress because
one thing or another just 'won't be right until the other thing is
taken care of'. I can't settle for it being less than perfect, yet
can't get it there. The proverbial 'spinning my wheels'.
I've taken a certain old adage to a warped extreme:
"Anything worth doing is worth doing right."
...but my barin translates this into...
"If it isn't going to be done right, don't bother doing it."
I wish I could be satisfied with creating a car like that green
Javelin, but the details I noted would eat me up every time I went
into the garage. It sucks big time.
