Charles, You can find both 304's and 360's all over. 401's are harder 
to come by so don't even get worried about a 401. It will cost the same 
to refurbish (do a cheap rebuild ) on either engine. The best thing is 
to find a vehicle that you can hear the engine run. That way you can go 
on the asumption that it runs now, so no matter what you do is better 
than 
the way it is now. Meaning real simple, you can just hone the cylinders 
and throw in new rings, bearings, gaskets and a new cam, lifters, and a 
basic valve job (don't worry about valve guides or new valves). Next is 
the fact that the 360 comes with the bigger valve heads, so I would 
spend my money on the 360 instead of the 304. Crankshafts don't 
necesarally have to be "reground" either. I have successfully rebuilt 
dozens of engines for my Jeeps that I use for mudboggs, trailriding and 
sand dragging with great success and only put in parts that had to be 
put in. The 401 that is going in my Gremlin, I have spent over $5000.00 
on parts and machine work so far and really is not needed to have fun, 
but for me I have waited along time to do this. At your age and 
economic situation you will be more than happy with a 360 low budget 
rebuild. When you decide what you want to do you are more than welcome
