This is off the AMC SW Regional file on my website, I guess I can comment
here, have not only "done" a National AMC (Houston 2001) but also founded,
and sponsored for 11 years the AMC SW Regional in Texas:
"We had the Regionals here in Houston for many years in the 1990s, the
record
number of cars was, and still is, 86 cars in 1992. The highest attendance
was 1998 when the club had the meet at the sprawling Trader's Village
complex in NW Houston and over 5000 people passed thru the display,
unfortunately only 49 cars were present, but there have been some meets
where you have 70 cars and less than 300 people attend so it goes both ways.
I may add that when I talk about involvement in different stages, one thing
that chaps my ass is folks who drive hundreds of miles to the event
(whatever event it may be, mixed make, swap, show, whatever) then leave
their cars in the parking lot. If we could have gotten the 18 AMC owners in
1998 to bring their rides inside, we would have had 67 cars, not 49. One
year the meet was buffeted by squall lines from a tropical storm off the
Texas coast! Another year the host hotel, Holiday Inn on I-10, bumped us
from the parking lot one day before the meet as 'not enough rooms had been
pre registered for us to use their parking lot' so we had to move the meet
on the day of show down to a restaurant parking lot which hardly fit all the
cars. Then it rained, so some meets go better than others! Sometimes the
temps in
the Texas summer hit 98-102 degrees, so judging a car underneath can be
tricky with temps on the ground about 140+ degrees."
I may add that we had about 149 cars at the Nationals here in Houston, and
Texas had never done a National aMC meet. If....we could have gotten those
25-40 cars in the parking lot to come in, the difference would had been
significant. The excuses were lame however,a nd I pointed out to many that
Texas wil never host another Nationals, so bring in the beater, bondo
bucket, altered, whatever it is...BE A PART OF A HISTORICAL EVENT.
If some of ya'll have ever seen my rant under "altered amcs" in the "parts"
file of my website, it touches on same subject. And I just talked to a
fellow yesterday about people getting involved. So you have the largest AMC
event in history in 1998 in Kenosha, Wisconsin for the Homecoming. Yet....I
could easily name about 5-10 people......who have AMCs, some of them extreme
low mile originals......who live within a three iron of Kennedy
Park.......who did not bring out their cars.
Think about that for a moment. You live less than 1000 yards from the
biggest meet in AMC history and your car never left the garage. Go figure!
