Will it be 'better'. Not in the eyes of most AMCers.
I personally would part out an AMC before dropping 
a non-AMC mill in it. I'd rather see 10 other cars 
improved by my parts than keep my one car going 
with another maker's engine supplying the power.

If you need power, a 401 will haul a Gremmie big time.
If you **MUST** stuff another makers motor in it,
I'd say 'stay in the family' and stuff a 440 in it.
But Mopar is as far as I'd ever condone straying.
For me, a GM engine in an AMC is pure sacrilege.
