First thank you for the informative website you host about AMC's. I am in dire need of some electrical assistance. My wife has a 1971 Sportabout that I maintain and keep on the road. Ever since she has had it there has been fuel gauge issues. I have been completely stumped on this issue. Some back story. She had a low light system on the car that just flashed continuously so I removed it. I think in removing this dummy light is where I started creating my issues. I trouble shot the system and found out that the temp gauge was in terrible shape. From my understanding the temp gauge acts as a voltage regulator for the fuel gauge. Fortunately I was able to find a new one. When the gauge cluster is not bolted into the Plastic dash bezel the fuel gauge works flawlessly with the sending unit. Once I screw it into the bezel it stops working. Also, while the cluster is unbolted it makes the spare sending unit I have smoke. So that tells me I need to step down the voltage somewhere? Is there a procedure to removing the low light flasher that I am missing? My initial thought was it just worked to assist the gauge. Now I am wondering if it also provided voltage regulation to it as well. Any help would be fantastic. I'd like my wife to know how much gas she has. Thanks in advance for any advise you may have! Sincerely,Brian Hackethal
