I did the same thing with the headliner board in my Javelin, which was starting to disintegrate, but did both sides.  It worked really well.  Dan

      My 62 classic wagon has cardboard kick panels (factory parts). I stiffenened them up with one layer of fiberglass on the back side. Joe

      Another option might be thin birch plywood; that appears to be what the
      interior specialists use on some of the cable reality shows.  My son used
      Masonite (at my suggestion) several years ago on the door panels of his car,
      and over time they warped pretty badly, buckling between the fasteners.
      Apparently they had absorbed moisture while in storage.
