Re: [AMC-list] AMC twin grip posi question interchange

Darren,

You're line of thinking makes a lot of sense regarding the same carrier for twin grip or open diff. However the engineers at AMC didn't see it your way. Unfortunately there is a carrier for twin grip and a carrier for the conventioal open style differential. I am still working on installing a twin grip differential carrier into the white Javelin's AMC 20 rear axle. I removed a 3.15 open carrier and I'm installing a 2.72 twip grip or as the Jeep guys call it, trak lok, I believe.
There is without a doubt two separate carriers for each style differential.
Also there is a carrier for twin grip ratios that are different from other twin grip ratios. If you desire the 2.87 gears to remain in your rear axle, you will need to find a twin grip carrier that will accomodate the 2.87 gears. Now this one I'm not sure of exactly. There is a cut off point as to which gears fit which carrier. I believe 2.72 and 2.56 take the same carrier, as does I believe 2.87 and 3.15 ratios, not exactly sure on that, and the 3.73's and up take another carrier. Please some one correct me if I'm wrong...

Good luck with it Darrern,

Armand

Hello Eddie!

I want to make my 287:1 conventional rear to a twin grip limited slip rear I have been studying the service manual and the only difference I can see between the conventional rear and twin grip rear is that the twin grip rear has clutch disks, plates, and a belleville washer.

I see that the differential gear needs splines in it for the clutch parts to slide onto. Does the conventional differential gear have those splines in it? What I mean is that is the differential gear made the same for both twin grip and conventional? I would think it would be cheaper to make them both the same and amc just added a clutch if someone optioned the twin grip rear.

Thanks for your time

Darren M
