Re: [AMC-list] QUICK Help me ID this V8 block

401 casting number (which you have) with no displacement cast into the side can be built as a 343/360/390/401. You'll have to pull a head and measure the stroke to determine what it is, no other way around it. The engine has been replaced at some point as the 401 (and the thick wall/deck service replacement block) didn't come out until 1971.

Jeep used AMC 327s through 1967, 68-70 used Buick 350 V-8s. "Ordered with a special AMC drivetrain" is BS if you ask me. He'd have had to have LOTS of money for a dealer to do the swap at the dealership. Most likely the drivetrain was changed years later when the Buick 350 wore out or was damaged in some way. I think he's just making a cover story up to make it sound good instead of the truth, or he's not the original owner as he claims. Either way there's a lie in there if you ask me (now that is just my opinion...).

I don't think he's trying to cover anything up except for the fact that the drivetrain has been changed. Why I don't know, except that if it has an AMC drivetrain when it shouldn't makes it "special" and therefore worth more (in his eyes). I'd ignore the fact that it's been changed, it's been improved if you ask me, just don't get hood-winked into thinking it's worth more than any other Waggie of that era. Well, it might be to you since it's got an AMC engine instead of the Buick anyway. Just offer what you think it's worth in the condition it's in and let it go if he blows that "rare and special" smoke up your rear end.

-----------------------
Guy claims it's a 401, but it's not, though I don't know what it is.

Block ID on Back 3198951
Service Block with No numbers embossed on the side of the block
1.23 Motorcraft 2 Bbbl (not the 1.21 normally use on 360's)
Vlv cover tag 302N18
3 hole Balancer
TH400 with Dana 20... BOP bellhousing pattern adapter, etc...

Original owner of this 68 Wagoneer said he ordered with a special AMC
drivetrain

What do you think?
