[AMC-list] Torqued or Not Torqued

Well, I'm temporarily defeated again. When I put the car back together the
cushion at the rear of the overdrive (which rests on the rear crossmember) is
about 1/2 inch too far forward to be able to bolt up. I'm working by myself and
everything under that car has been a struggle. I know there's not a dimensional
change that I introduced. I used the 199 bellhousing instead of the old 195.9
bellhousing that was in the car, but I compared the depth with the old
bellhousing and there was no difference. I think the problem is that the
makeshift pedestals that the previous owner made to install the 232 have shifted
somehow. I can't see any obvious signs of it but I had loosened them when
trying to separate the torque tube from the tranny during disassembly of the
car. I've tried raising the engine off of the pedestals/mounts and prying
against the cushion mount with a pry bar. I have tried blocking the rear
wheels and pushing forward on the car with the engine mounts loose. I've
dropped the crossmember again and checked that the cushion was mounted
correctly. Nothing has worked so far. It's like the driveline has shrunk 1/2
inch. At this point I'm going to loosen all the engine cushion bolts to the
maximum and remove the clutch bellcrank mount so there shouldn't be anything
holding the engine in position fore and aft but graviity.
