Remember to take into account the diameter of the tyre you plan to run. Where the 16 will clear any suspension issues, the tyre might rub if it is too tall. If you run 15-70 series tyres, they will be taller than the 16-40. 
You might install a 16 wheel at a shop with 4 1/2 inch BS, measure the wheel well and all protrusions, then talk to a wheel-tyre guy about your needs.
Some cars look horrible with the wrong tyre/wheel combo. I saw a classic solid axle 'Vette with 17s and the car looked horrible. Sitting next to him was another SA 'Vette with 15s and he looked right at home. The 17s probably cost twice as much as the 15s, so cost for the wheel was not the issue, but the looks were wrong....Russ
