Type F is the correct fluid for BW autos and Ford FMX and C4s, but they changed to Mercon for later C4s and all C6s (DexronII and Mercon are interchangeable and Dexron III is both combined with an antishudder lube for lockup converters)
   Mercon V is pure synthetic and Mopar IV is too. Now they have Dexron VI and many others. Mercury Low Vis is the most recent AFAIK.
   Aftermarket is having fun trying to keep up (Amsoil seems to keep pace fairly well)
   Type A fluid was almost a gear lube (used in cast iron power glides and fluid drives)

Dexron can be used as a replacement for Type A. Ford went from using Type F 
fluid to Mercon V, which isn't necessarily the same thing as Dexron.
