I believe type A was the predecessor to Dexron.  It was used in GM 
transmissions in the 50's (and probably others).  I would think you could 
substitute a non-synthetic Dexron (III or IV, whatever's available).  Type A 
is still around.  My son bought some at a convenience store when his cooling 
line came off and sprayed out most of the fluid.  Some of your cheap 
universal fluids are type A (dollar stores and such).
