Re: [AMC-list] trunnion advise wanted

If you have an AMC shop manual it's in there, but not directly. Just look at the exploded suspension diagram and it's pretty self-evident how to take it off. f you have to remove the coil spring (photo on page 16-2). That's the tricky part! You need a tool to hook the "ears" in the spring seats together then jack the car up. Don't be tempted to wire them together -- very dangerous!

I have got by with bending "hooks" in the ends of two pieces of 1/8" thick x 1/2" wide steel. Measure the distance with the car on the ground so the hooks will go in just by reaching up and grabbing the edge of the fender and pulling down a little. Then you have to pull the shock and jack the front of the car up while WATCHING the spring. If it starts to "cock" sideways the least little bit STOP -- can't do it that way, have to buy a special holding tool. This has worked with 80% of the cars I've worked on, but you MUST be careful! Handle the spring like it's a bottle of nitro glycerin that will go off if dropped -- it might! There isn't too much pressure on it this way, but enough to break a jaw or do some real damage if it comes loose.

Once the spring is out the tall spring seat on the top of the trunnion screws off, revealing a nut with cotter pin. After that it should be easy.

This link is also helpful, but is referring to the more trouble prone 64-69 American/Javelin/AMX trunnions. Gives details on making a safer spring removal tool -- springs are identical though the trunnion design is different.
