Pliers work for me too. If you haven't pulled the control housing out of 
the dash, doing that makes it easier to get the clips on.

BTW, as long as the outside of the cable is okay, a lawn mower shop can 
put new cores in them. I had that done on my 68 American. It was cheap 
to have done ($10?) and the guys at the mower shop got a big kick out of it.
