Re: [AMC-list] AMC-list Digest, Vol 13, Issue 47

Tom,
Check to see if the pressure relief valve is installed correctly.
It is supposed to open when the oil pressure gets too high. If it doesn't, seals blow, gaskets leak and large puddles of oil form below the car.
I'm not sure but I believe the relief valve can be installed backwards.
Good luck.

Sounds like they're fine once everything is properly oiled and up to
temperature. After startup some parts are warmer than others and they don't
match up as well as one would like.

I've heard similar things about aero engines like the R-4360. They would be fine
when shutdown but would have a problem when restarted.

I was an engineering officer on two diesel powered ships in the Navy.? I
learned to dread the first two or three hours underway.? If anything on an engine was going to fail, it was going to fail in that time period.?? Our big diesels could (and ofter did) run for weeks without ever being shut down, but
let them sit in port for a few days, and almost invevitably you would go
through a vulnerable period?shortly after startup.?? That was the time when we were manuevring?in close quarters too, and it kept the?EOW oin his toes.?
Other parts of the running gear could have problems any time (hot shaft
bearings, loss of vacuum in evaporators, etc.) but the engines seemed to tell
you that they didn't like sitting idle.

Good thought on tracking down the cylinder!

Unfortunately all the 196 engines (except the aluminum model) have solid
lifters. Seafoam in the oil can certainly clean out hydraulic lifters and get them pumping again, but won't do a thing for the solids. If they make noise
they just need adjusting! But you're right, things like engines and auto
trannys don't like sitting for ling periods of time without running.

Got time today, got it started, probably ruined it outright.

I had oil pressure no problem, I installed a pressure gauge under the hood. I started it from the cab, watching the tach (2000 - 2500) and stopwatch, at
40 secs I noticed the oil light was on. Immediately turned off the engine,
found all the oil on the driveway and the crankcase dry. So it ran without
oil pressure long enough to pump out 4 - 5 quarts.

The gasket popped out of the oil filter on one side. I'm 101% certain it was
installed correctly and tight enough, as I pre-filled the oil filter last
weekend and was very careful with it. I recall assembling it distinctly. I
am beyond certain about everything involving the external oiling.

If it was 2 - 10 secs I'd fix and press on, but I think it's too likely a
total loss. If so I'm basically screwed, as I'm broke and $2500 on a credit
card to build the motor. That's it for 2010.

With the oil light coming on at 40 seconds that would indicate that the engine
had at least 5psi pressure until that time.
I'd try putting more oil in and restarting, listening for $carey sounds.

Tom - I'm at a loss for words. I'b be devastated. Hope it isn't a
total loss, and hope you can get in and see what's going on.

It appears that the oil pressure went insanely high. I was worried about oil
pressure loss (my plumbing, etc) but I just went out and looked at my oil
gauge -- the pointer is on the wrong side of the stop! Eg. it broke
internally after pegging past maximum.

That would explain why a loop of the oil filter gasket exited it's groove
while installed -- it just plain old got pushed out.

It's small comfort knowing it's not my work that failed (yet anyways).

I should have smelled a rat -- I had 20+ psi cranking. I chalked that up to a new, tight motor. I think the bearings are assembled wrong or something (I
didn't do that). The machine shop assembled the short block.

Yeah, no sledgehammers, I'm just bummed out.

Front clip, 290 motor, rad, and rear axle as well as dash are spoken for. Other parts are available until I load it on the scrap trailer probably next week. Rear quarters will be cut off to sell as they are rustfree.

By chance, does this car share the same hood hinge spring as a '70? I'm in need of a pair. In fact, would someone please tell me what years and models
this spring was used on so I can broaden my search? Thanks much!
