Re: [AMC-list] 1979 AMC FREON?

There are three different kinds of oils used with R-134a, ester, PAG and POE. Ester WILL NOT mix with the mineral oil used with R-12, the other two are synthetic oils and will mix. The mineral based oil used with R-12 (freon, though "freon" is now commonly used as a term for ANY refrigerant) WILL NOT work well with R-134a -- the oil isn't carried through the system, or not enough is carried by the R-134a to properly lube the compressor anyway. So it's best to drain the oil no matter what.
Here's a simple explanation of the conversion: http://www.aa1car.com/library/retrofit.htm

thats really not true anymore about the oils and all not mixing between 134
and r12. i have done it several times witout changing the drier. the early
oils in 134 wouldnt mix with r12. the new stuff mixes just fine. all that is
needed to be done, propperly remove all the old r12. get the cleaner run thru
your system, put in a few ounces of pag oil, and get the adapter plugs that
are sold at most all auto parts store, and charge. the 134 stuff you can buy
off the shelf. get the gauge system and charge it yourself. the 134 seems to
work better at a little lower pressure than the old r12. in my old frod
pick-em-up it sure did anyway. in elpaso summers, that a/c couldnt be on
high, it would freeze you out of the truck. thats one of the rigs i did that
on.
