Re: [AMC-list] Electronic ignition conversion

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a billit GM style HEI distributor  new for less then a Petronix kit. May go that way. Its just under 70.00 Was  looking for a setup for possibly 1/2 that used and all amc. Im not gonna be spinning it much at all. I am restoring the car to better condition and getting her ready for a new owner. I usally just yank the 6 and throw in a 360 but figured somone may wanna keep this car stock.

The first thing I'd suggest is a simple Pertronix Ignitor conversion for the points distributor. Easy to install, and you can throw your points and condensor in the glove box along with a screwdriver and match book (to set the points... if you can find a match book!) and be up and running should it ever burn out. Only have to run one wire, a switch +12V lead. It works as good as an HEI or anything else for a stock engine. So unless you run 5000 rpm all the time, a Pertronix and a 40-50,000 volt coil is all you need.
Second best is the 78+ AMC/Motorcraft setup with a TFI upgrade. The upgrade is just a big cap, better locking wires (lock on the cap better), and a hot coil. If you don't get the TFI coil you're not doing much. Instead of the odd looking TFO coil you can use a hot aftermarket coil that will look more at home under the hood if you prefer. This route gets you the big cap with wider spacing between the plug towers. That reduces cross firing at high rpm with the hot coil. But again, it's not really necessary on the six unless you're spinning it a lot often.
