Re: [AMC-list] So many issues...71 hornet wagon

Like Joe says check and replace all old rubber hoses. They will fail with todays gas.
Also check for fuel in the oil. The pumps will often fail and leak into the oil.
You may also find the tank needs drained and cleaned.
Has the car been sitting before this?

I am needing some help with this new car. The gas bleeds back to the tank every time I turn off the motor. Is this normal? I have a vacuum system on my car.. wipers.. and they are run from the fuel pump. Occasionally.. once a week... I cant get gas to the carb.. empty filter and wont start like it is out of gas. I prime the carb, nothing. I disconnected the fuel line to the fuel pump and poured gas to the pump. reconnected it all and primed the carb again.. it started and it pulled gas from the tank. When I got to the gas station, I could only get a few gallons in it. So... it wasn't empty after all.. Any ideas???

I hate dropping a strange turd in anyones bowl, but that price is steep. Kudos for offering anything substantial for AMC, JC Whitney offers a radiator cap to fit AMCs ya know, but in todays economy that is pricy.
When I rebuilt my 360 on the back yard patio, and it chassis dyno'd at 320 HP, I had taken a set of stock AMC rods down to my local speed shop. We looked through the piston book and came up with a set of C***y 350 slugs that came close. He machined the pins to take the pots and we bored out the engine to match. I was into the pistons for $25 swap meet pistons and $200 to machine the pins/block.
Now, this was 10 years ago and prices have jumped, but look up matching 350 pistons and talk to a machine shop, see whats out there.
I know the guy in Sweet Home (sorry I can't remember his name, he passed away soeme years ago) had 305 Buick pistons machined to go into his 287 twin turbo by the same guy......Russ

so, who knows the difference in the cam specs of the hydraulic and solid
lifter cams for the 196?
i have a couple of good solid lifter cams. i have a couple of froze hydraulic
lifters in my aluminum motor. i cant tell if the cam is pitted or not. i
wonder if where tom got his rv cam makes one for the aluminum motor with the
same kind of increases?? i dont have the program for my computer to compare
the cam specs. i dont even know what the original cams are. the tsm said
something like .254 or so lift? thats all i saw. i think it could probably
stand alot more work for more bottom end torque. that would be nice. so, ya,
im just wondering (pretty sure i am) out of luck to use a good cam from my
solid lifter cast iron motor.

Well, see if it's the same part number in the parts catalog, same year iron
vs aluminum. It just might be the same.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 360 from a 1983 Wagoneer that I am putting into a 1989 Wrangler. What I need is a flywheel for the 360 so I can use the stock tranny in the Wrangler. My name is Dale, and my cell phone # is 989-860-9969. Thanks again!

Blessings,

I just checked the 81 and 82 TSMs Ken -- all the SR4s have the ratios I listed for fours and sixes -- different for each. The T-4, however, lists the same ratios for both: 1st = 4.03, 2nd = 2.37, 3rd = 1.50, 4th 1:1, R = 3.76:1. So obviously you were thinking about the T-4. 82 must have been a transition year, the TSM says both were used in all models for fours and sixes.

I note that if you're not sure which you have, it's easy to tell by the shift pattern. SR4 has reverse to the left and forward, T-4 has reverse to the right and back (at least in 82... all should be that way though).

I'd have to check the references but I THINK this is the only year that the 4
and 6 SR4s had different ratios. Later ones all had the 4:1 1st. (?)
With a 2something:1 differential I prefer the 4:1.
