I believe someone sent you a link to Tom's WPS.com site where he shows how to install
a Radio shak 5v voltage reducer/transformer.
  That is all you need to do. I did take the face off the one I have here and it is the same principle as the 63 Tom shows.
12volts goes into the gas gauge where the contact points reside, they open and close to provide a fluctuating  voltage that averages 5 volts. The gauge I have here is pretty much at it's end of life point. The windings are black and it appears to be near death.
