I suppose I should have qualified that with "stock pre 64 Americans". All
were 196 powered only (L-head up to the "Pow-R-Pak" OHV), ya know... And
for those seeing this for the first time, that reference is to ball JOINTS!!

Check the taper of the tierod end stud. There was a change on some
vehicles, but I think the big cars all used the more common Ford type end. Not
sure if GM used the same taper end or not. I do know there are two different
tapers. If you have the smaller taper you could order a ream for the larger
one and ream the hole out. The smaller one is the less common. That is
assuming they have the same taper as ball joints. The reams aren't cheap
though. Speedway has a 7? and 10? with the 10 being the most common, IIRC. They
run $80 each. For all I know the Caddy has the right taper, you'll have to
find one and check -- and of course report back either way!

I discovered that the tie rods for my room mate's Rebel were expen$ive and
not nearby so I have been retro checking more common Caddy tierods (they
use the same adjuster sleeve) and idler arm (it seems very similar but hers
is bent so I can't tell 100% till I have time to take it out and see)

The guy who did the work is an experienced hot rodder and has done
several other swaps and similar rear suspension builds. I'm pretty sure
he checked parts fit first. I might be mixing ball joints and tierod
ends as far as taper, I forget now! I do recall quite clearly that the
taper on the tierods are different between the 70+ small cars and the
Classic. I had to do some welding and filing to get a pitman arm from a
79 Spirit PS box to fit the drag link on my Classic properly. I didn't
have a tight fit all the way through -- welded up both sides of the hole
and filed to fit. It was fitted MOST of the way through, at least 3/4.
Welding rod is much stronger than the cast or forged steel, and it
wasn't a problem. IIRC the newer small cars have the smaller taper (7?,
I assume) and the big ones had the larger (10? assumed -- that's the
ball joint ream choices). ------------- Date: Wed, 23 Dec 2009 21:39:35
-0800 From: tom jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> I was however talking about 63
(10,80) CLASSIC, big car, not AMERICAN (01).I'm quite sure that the
lower ball joint on my 63 CLASSIC has a BIG taper, and the '79 Spirit l
arm I tried to fit to it the '63 steering knuckle had a SMALL taper.

I might have the parts around to verify this, but I'm pretty sure of
this...
I hope the guy in A.M.C. did simply tighten the nut down and hope that
would
hold it in. The small taper will of course go into the hole, it just won't
bite into the tapered hole.

Maybe 64-up AMERICANs have large-taper lower ball joints. I know that 79
Spirit has SMALL TAPER lower ball joint. I tried one.

An interesting question with an interesting answer! The answer is "sort
of". The rails are made the exact same way with one caveat -- the Ambassador
front rails are stretched 4" between the firewall and spring tower.
Everything else under the car is nearly identical from 67-78 (possibly some minor
changes). Sedans and wagons should be the same except for the rear floor
panels, main structure is identical. The front rails will have to be
shortened, but other than that will work. I'd shorten then butt weld with a
reinforcement plate inside at the weld. Just cut a piece from the old rail and
weld it in with a couple inches overlap on each side of the weld. Easy enough
if you're drilling spot welds and removing the rail intact.

Todd below is looking for information regarding unibody framerails and
whether they would interchange with Ambassador, even partials or whole, or if
someone has stuff like this for sale. Feel free to comment and thanks in
advance to all who might, be sure to copy your reply to him also.

I have another question for you. I was wondering if the unibody frame
rails of a 1973 Ambassador 4 door would match the ones on my Machine? I would
really hate to chop up my 1970 rebel SST 2dr to use it's perfect frame
rails. I'm making very slow progress with the restoration. It is very time
consuming to pull a car apart, piece by piece to sand blast and powder coat.

Thanks Dave! I repeat the sentiments -- Merry Christmas Everyone!! It's
raining here, supposed to all day. that's what we get since it's not
cold enough to snow! A wet Christmas is only a bit more preferable than
a white, frozen, slippery one! I guess only to a southerner who isn't
used to shoveling snow every year...

It was good seeing all the holiday wishes flying about. Well, a Merry
Christmas to everyone out there! And if you celebrate a different
holiday, well, have a happy one. Got the fireplace going, listening to
Christmas music and the kids are around the tree. Time for me to get
back in there!

Gary - get you and your wife down to Florida. It sounds way too cold
up there! I'm hoping to sneak on down to Apalachicola and over to Cape
San Blas in a month or two.

Merry Christmas!

My 88 just hit 293,000 miles, but AW4 went out . It most likely never had
the fluid changed , was going to ,but did not make it in time. It will hook
up when it is cold but then goes out . It seems like a valve is sticking
when it builds up pressure

So far not freezing and we should be able to travel to grandparents.
