You are correct! I studied the exploded diagram closely this time. The shaft inside the column has a solid/hollow portion that looks like it would collapse about the same as the intermediate shaft -- 4-6", maybe a little less. Plus the tube is in two pieces also. To top it off, there are pot metal "capsules" in the under dash mount that are bigger than the bolt heads. The capsules are designed to break out if hit hard enough and let the column drop off the dash. I'm not so sure that's all that great an idea, but I'm sure a lot of research went into it.

Frank. I got REAL familiar with my 73. While it does not have the cheese grater jacket, it is built to collapse. There are provisions inside it with plastic tabs that will sheer and allow collapse. The feature is there just harder to see.
