[AMC-list] Charlotte/Lowes AMC steve Green auction cars

Thanks for the info, Mr. Chip. Was I correct that it was 5%? I mentioned the buyers/sellers fee so that anyone looking at  the pricing remembers what the TRUE cost is, since someone on the list asked what it went for. That 71 Javelin was very nice, interesting color interior and exterior color combo and went for 15K. 
It is listed for sale on that site you mentioned for $21900. 
I thought that many of the senior series AMC's went for low prices, compared to the pacers, Gremlin and Spirit that got good bucks. The Spirit 6/4speed 10K miles, went for 9K.
As I said, it was just my opinion... and conservative New England upbringing about the auction costs. I have no idea who any of the people involved that you mentioned, what they do or their part of all of it, but was just my thoughts. 125K for rental space is a lot of money for sure. I wonder how many cars were auctioned off on that day and the next. There were far more than just the AMC's there,  at least 25 before and there were more to be sold later and the next day. Anyway, The other Javelin, the nice low miles maxi blue one went for $33500, but I saw it in an ad in one of the auto mags a few months later going up for auction. Must be in either the Hemmings Muscle car or classic car mags or Car and Driver. Those are the only ones I get, so when I get a chance i will go through my filed mags and see what i can come up with.  I attended the Steve Green Auction and just found my listing of all the cars 
that were sold and the pricing that I logged.
 I went because I was particularly interested in the low miles 74 Javelin 
pricing to get an idea of what a similar car with low mileage might be worth. It 
went for $33,500 plus fees. I thought , and was hoping it would have brought 
40+.

Anyway, the 71 Matador sold for $6250.  Bear in mind that the buyers  have to 
pay a $100 fee just to enter the auction, and there was also a buyer's and 
Sellers premium on the sale of the car, on top of the selling price .I think it 
was 5% each but am not positive. There were some good buys there but I didn't 
register, I really felt it was insulting to hold an auction, charge  a buyer and 
seller 5% premium AND charge someone a fee just to be entitled to bid, but 
that's me. Just didn't want to waste a hundred bucks. I am sure there might have 
been others there that might have bid on cars to buy, but didn't want to spend 
the registration fee,.and IMHO, the more buyers that are at an auction and might 
bid, being caught up in the moment,  would have bid up the pricing and more 
money might have been  raised on the AMC cars that had slow bid starts or were 
priced below their worth- I know that I might have done that. Guess It is good I 
didn't, though. no more room to house any more
 .  I guess I have enough. My family would not have welcomed me back home if I 
had brought home another child to garage and feed. LOL. The Auction house made 
good money on this deal, earning 10% and the fees. I guess I have heard that 
some or many of the cars were bought by non AMC collectors but used car dealers 
just trying to make a buck and churn them. I wondered if many in the AMC groups 
bought some. I did see that 74 Javelin advertised for sale a few months later 
by another auction house. Any idea what it went for there.

Also for what its worth, prior to the AMC auction there was an auction of other 
make classic and muscle cars and many of those had reserves that were not met 
and not sold. From people I talked to, the, pricing was way down on most 
vehicles, due to lack of demand, lack of money due to the economy. There was a 
gorgeous 57 I think Ford convertible Skyliner  that did not reach its bid., 
amongst many others. The were auctions of other cars after the AMC auction on 
Saturday and then also on Sunday if I recall, though I left for home on Sunday 
morning.

Ken,

The '74 Javelin with 1300 miles or so was pretty interesting. I think 
the buy in that segment was the '71 Javelin SST in silver, it had 6k 
on the clock and sold in the mid-teens. I believe it is still in Dave 
Murray's inventory at http://www.orlandoclassiccars.com/ and is 
still, in my opinion, a bargain. Clarify for me what sale the other 
Javelin went through and I'll research it in the SCM database and see 
if I can dig up a result.

You'll look long and hard before finding a sale with as low as 5/5% 
commissions, many of which are negotiated down to get more deals 
done, that does not have an entry fee. I cover umpteen sales a year 
for Sports Car Market magazine from Gooding down to little sales like 
Tom's and most are higher. Did you know that the Charlotte Motor 
Speedway and AACA charged Tom something along the lines of $125k just 
to have the sale there? Hence why he has moved to a nicer indoor 
venue nearby for his future Autofair-related sales. Along with his 
own corporate costs, paying the Adcocks et.c. he did not make nearly 
as much as you think he did even with the all-no-reserve Green 
Collection. I put on a sale in Akron, Ohio with Bob Lichty back in 
August - we were 8/8% with no bidder entry fee, kept costs to a 
minimum and it was still six figures. They're not free to put on by 
any stretch of the imagination and the good ones create a very unique 
atmosphere - see Mike Leith's 70% sale in Raleigh 2 weekends ago.

The '71 that Garry bought from me also benefits from some much-needed 
fettling since the sale to include all fluids, some brake work 
including the master cylinder and a careful and comprehensive 
detailing. It was not this nice back in April. I think I'll take it 
out to a car club meeting tonight and let some folks enjoy seeing it 
before it leaves for Duluth.
