Jim,

I had a similar problem with an engine I bought that did not have a dipstick. I simply drained all the oil, filled it to the proper capacity as listed in the owners manual, and then marked a "new" full mark on a replacement dipstick. Give it a try, it will only cost you the price of the replacement fluid.
