Re: [AMC-list] Adding TBI fuel injection to a...

Great find! Us orphaned guys have to stick together! The ECM you use seems to be the most commonly hacked, so easy to do now with a few tools. Don't hold your breath for a YF style carb mount! You'll just have to make an adapter as described by the Corvair guy. Besides, the YF was used on the L-heads, not the 196 OHV. They used a Holley 1909 or... some other Holley model on the later ones (L-heads too). The OHV carb is much smaller than the YF, at least the butterflies are. That doesn't mean it doesn't flow as much or more, velocity is higher in the smaller venturi. The old L-head turned just a little slower than the OHV. I think they are rated for power at about the same rpm, but in daily driving the L-head is rarely turned up much. The OHV isn't either really, maybe 500 rpm more than the L-head. Tractor motors don't need rpm to pull a little car around!

Exactly the right crowd to look at. Nice motor, sort of an orphan, many
performance mods are home-made. This guy Ted Brown did a great job of
installing and documenting a TBI install. I've been searching high and low
for hard info on a "better" ECM than the 1227747 but I'm gonna stick with it
(the one used in the Howell kit, also).

About the same power level as the AMC 6's. Ted even did DIS ignition.
Everything he did for his will be easier on AMC sixes (coolant temp, etc).
There's even an Auto Meter sensor that's GM-coolant-sensor compatible but
fits in a small hole (a real problem for AMCs that don't use the aluminum
manifold).

Nice research on donors for the throttle body. If one of them has a "carter
YF type" mounting base off I go.
