Re: [AMC-list] Still chasing e's

Joe,

Current thinking is that crimping with shrink tubing is the way to go. The idea is that the solder makes the connection brittle which will cause problems over time. In the FWIW category, the connector body is a standard part so if the wiring is okay otherwise, you can remove the terminals from new connector and put the old ones in it.

I worked on the Rambler a little more this weekend. George from Houston had advised me to run a separate ground wire to each tail light fixture in order to have good ground circuits for the lights. I had repainted the rear of the car before mounting the tail lights and had no working light on the left side and a dim bulb on the left side. Sockets were clean and the bulbs were new. There was just no juice getting to the body ground circuit. George had said the lights were grounded to the chassis through the screws which hold the light fixtures.

I cleaned up the mounting surfaces with a Dremel tool and wire brush and protected the area with di-electric grease. I didn't want to run the separate ground wires for various reasons. I reinstalled the lights and now have bright tail lights. I cleaned the dimmer switch plug and replaced the dimmer switch, just because....

I reconnected the headlight ground circuit (body ground near the radiator support) and now have one bright headlight. The old girl awoke with one eye open and stared at me. The other light has a bad socket (brittle plastic which broke when I removed the headlight to clean the socket) which I will replace tonight. I was warned by another hobbyist this weekend about using crimp coneectors on external wiring, so I will probably crimp and solder the new wiring splice for the connector.

Still having fun with a car I probably shouldn't have bought.
