Re: [AMC-list] Nash, AMC or Kaiser?

I actually coined the GEN-1/2/3 designations a few years ago when I wrote an article tracing the evolution of the AMC V-8. Some don't like the terminology because GM uses it for their later small blocks (GEN-II anyway). I used it because it just makes sense. Couldn't do that with the sixes, not going all the way back to the first Nash design anyway. There were seven different designs, starting with the 1916 Nash, which was a clean sheet of paper design, and ending with the 4.0L. Us AMC guys usually heard it referred to as the Rambler V-8 as that's what it was mostly used in. But it was first used exclusively in the 56 Nash Ambassador and Hornet Specials, which were a Statesman and Wasp two door with Ambo and Hornet trim, and the engine was the 250/4V. The 327 came out mainly for the regular Ambo and Hornet in 57, but was of course used in the 1500 Rambler Rebels. Naturally the Nash guys refer to it as a Nash V-8, and many still called Ramblers and even later AMC badged cars Nashes. So Nash and Rambler V-8 do fit. The company was AMC in 54, engine came out in 56, so it's an AMC design no matter how you look at it.

That would be me! I've always heard it called either the Nash 327 or Rambler 327.

Jim, I assume that is you posting as carnuck?
I am somewhat confused because I have never seen that engine called a Nash engine?
I have only seen it called Gen-1, or called by it's displacement.
