      Hi Eddie.

I live in Katy and have spent the last 3 years rebuilding a 1980 Jeep CJ7 with a 304.

I cannot keep a starter in this thing. I am on my third rebuilt one and they sound horrible when at the beginning and then they fail. I am VERY concerned about excess wear on the flywheel ring gear.

The starters they have been giving me all have 9 tooth pinion gears. I have tried the spacer trick between the starter and the housing, to no avail. In fact, it looks like the starter is barely engaging, judging from the wear patterns.

I am very reluctant to drive it very far for fear it wont start up again.

I did receive some info off one of the jeep forums that indicates there may have been a 153 tooth and a 168 tooth. If that is true, I have no way of specifying a certain starter for a specific application.

Any thoughts about all this? Any help is appreciated.
