If things aren't plumbed just right, who knows what affect it will have, even if it is only vapors. If it is bypassed, I would make sure that all of the lines are connected to something. Funny thing - I have never seen one for sale anywhere since I started putting my car back together over 8 years ago. Subject: RE: [AMC-list] 71 AMX fuel system question I believe you can easily by pass it or disconnect it. It is not required to make the car perform. I believe it is a safety feature. There is mention of it in the 71 TS manual. We called it the gas check valve. I' not sure I remember what AMC called it. If you look at their chapter on Fuel (might be chapter 3 or 4) it shows the line from the gas tank and all the places it goes. My understanding was that the canister would stop gas from pouring out of the fuel tank if the car flipped over in an accident and was upside down. Other folks (Terry/Steve) chime in if I'm wrong here. What kind of 71 AMX do you have ? What's your name and where are you located ? Always nice to see another 71 AMX out there. In the driver side rear fender well there is a fuel canister with a float in it.? It apears to be made out of some type of composite material.? The top of it does not want to stay on.? Does anyone know what this thing does (I assume it has something to do with the smog junk).? It has a real small fuel line attatched to it (from the front of the car) and then another one out of it into the top of the fuel tank.? Does anyone know if I can get a replacement or is it okay to just plumb around (by-pass) it with fuel line?
