the blocks -are-not- the same between the old 172/184/196 and new
199/232/258/4.0.  the latter underwent the evolutionary changes you're
thinking of with the distributor area one place that remained stable
from '64 to '06, but the older engine is pretty nearly completely
different - and different even between sidevalve, ohv, and aluminum
ohv versions.
