they didn't; it was a product of pre-renault amc-owmed amgeneral.
that's why it has a jeep-like barred grille.  when gm bought their
stake they wanted to use it in their hummer knockoffs.  jeep sued over
use of this trademark [yes it is trademarked] but the courts
determined right-to-use came with the amg share.

btw gm transferred mfg of the 6.5 to amg about '00 when they switched
to the isuzu duramax, and amg has made several durability improvements
over the years, but the original agreement was that they'd support it
only for 10 years.  reality is that they'll probably continue as long
as the military wants hummers, but does anyone know?
