If the trans has air slots around where it bolts to the bell that indicates that it could be air cooled. There may just be one slot near the front right side. From what you note below it appears that the trans could be ordered either way, at least from 1967 on. I checked my 66 and 67 TSMs. The 67 mentions that the HD/Fleet trans is the same with the exception of an added oil cooler. Some climates (or dealers) may have got the cooler on all or most of the cars sent there. The TSM states: "The converter-out tube with heavy duty equipment directs converter return fluid to the cooler fitting at the right front side of the transmission case." This is just below the slot I mention above and sticks straight out from the case, right above the pan lip near the front right pan bolt hole. There is a return line threaded boss on the same side near the back. It goes "down" instead of "out" -- just dumps back in the pan. If you get around to looking at your trannys see if they have those fittings, even plugged. They would be plugged for air cooling. The M-35 has the boss for the outlet but it's not drilled IIRC. You can see a pic of the fittings on the trans on the second page of the HD/Fleet section of the 67 TSM. It's not mentioned in the 68 or 69 TSMs. You're right about the guessing, but that's why I'm making these posts -- so those with a 65-69 car with 199 and M-35/36/37 can check and report. Or those with some other on-hand knowledge like yourself.

I parted out one 69 199 auto = aircooled
68 199 auto = aircooled
68 232 auto = aircooled
69 232 auto = aricooled, my car with the S-42 tag.
I know one of the tranies I sent out west was a 37 and air cooled.
The remaining two trannies are sitting in my shed, soon to be scrapped as I have stored them for 10 years now.
I I can remember to do so I will look at the trans in the shed to see what they are tagged as before they go away.
all I have is the tranmissions, not converters or bellhousings.

Believe me, if any of those cars would have had a liquid cooled trans I would have kept it! or at least known what it was!
My TSM is either a 66 or 67 and it mentions the liquid cooled trans as being a "fleet option"...

Guessing what they did with the model numbers at this point is pretty fruitless, unless we can gather enough info from people to cover enough of the models in question to rule out swaps and such.
