Re: [Amc-list] ou Can't use a Full Flow Pump on a Partial Flow Block

Wow! I guess it wasn't hard to change the casting, they did it to the L-head also. I wonder WHY though? Maybe to lower the filter on the block a bit for more clearance, or to change the angle? Looks to be the only reason, as far as I can tell from the TSMs and parts manual the pump bodies are near identical except for the filter housing and cover, so the whole thing almost has to be a little lower on the side of the block. If they weren't nearly identical they wouldn't even bolt up! I've got a 65 L-head in the back with one of those pumps, but haven't taken the engine out of the car or looked that close at it.

Really sad that the pump won't work on older blocks, but as Tom pointed out, it's not really necessary. My first L-head engine had 190K on it before rebuilding, and my OHVs never seemed to have a problem. The pump is hard to find anyway, being only one year.

I'm thinking that if one REALLY wanted a full flow filter then the pump body could be drilled and tapped and a new end cover machined (or it could be drilled and tapped?) to mount a remote filter. Hmm... IIRC the only difference in the cap was the by-pass is there instead of in the block. If the filter got clogged I'd much rather the engine get oil, as even dirty oil is usually better than none, so leaving the by-pass in the block isn't a bad thing. So maybe just the pump body needs to be drilled and tapped? Sounds like a job for Tom...

I'll do a photo shoot this weekend. It's too cold in the garage tonight. There's no easy way to make the pump work. The 65 block appears to be a one-year-only casting. I wish I had noticed the difference sooner.
