Re: [Amc-list] Gen3 V8 distributors

The number would be 12029, but that only says that it is an ignition coil.

The digits in the middle of a Ford part number are known (in the Ford
world) as the Basic Part Number. That number tells you what it
is. 12000 numbers relate to the ignition system. 12029 is an ignition coil.

The prefix indicates the design year (two characters), car line for
which the part was designed (one character), and the engineering or
service department that assigned the number. The suffix letters
indicate the revision level of the part. Service part numbers are
only incremented when they affect interchangeability, while
Engineering numbers are incremented with each change.

There are different Basic Part Numbers for raw castings and finished
parts. For example, a raw cylinder head is 6049, but a finished,
machined head is 6090.

In some instances, probably for space reasons, the Basic Part Number
is omitted, and the number is written as D0AE-AA. In this case, the
Basic Part Number is implied by the appearance of the part
itself. D0AE-AA is the casting number that appears on aluminum
cylinder heads for the Boss 429 engine.

Probably more than anyone needed to know about Ford part numbers, but
since AMC sourced some parts from Ford, you may come across them from
time to time.
