Re: [Amc-list] Amc-list Digest, Vol 22, Issue 80

I'm going to assume you know minimalistic stuff about this.
The noise is probably a cracked flexplate, could be much worse and be hard parts internal etc;

If your comfortable with tranny work, I'd pull the pain and look for chunkages [I'm going to live the typo as it seems to be built in for me to type pain instead of PAN]...Those that know me will understand.

  Your best bet is not to do anything at this point if you do not know trannys and aren't mechanical.
What you want to do is not panic. Start canvassing the area. You are looking for someone who does Volvo, 60-70's Ford trans or even older Studebaker trannys. Anyone can rebuilt the trans with the manuals and taking their time.
   The trick is cleanliness and taking the time to do every step. Not for the light of heart and you may get into a long term deal doing it yourself, scrounging parts etc;

. A late model flatrate trans shop may refuse to even look at it. Find a local car club, especially if you can find an orphan car club as the borqwarner trans made it's way around the block. Ford, Studebaker, AMC, all used them.

   Backing up, If you pull the pan and find no chunks and it looks clean that maybe you only need a new flexplate.
It is conceivable the flexplate could casue seeming trans issues. Does it make horrendous noise when starting?
  I would assume it would have to slip to cause seeming trans issues, but maybe not.
