AMC decided to build it into the temp gauge and when that bimetal spring quite, there was a clip on 5VDC regulator to hook up.

HI. Are you talking about the "instrument voltage regulator"? Thats what ford
called it when i worked there years ago. It was a little box like thing that
plugged into the back of the gauge panel into the circuit board on the old
fords i worked on. Thankyou,Joe.  Several 72-73 Gremlins,74 AMX,67 Ambassador
convertible,66 Classic wagon,57 Metro coupe,several parts cars(of course)! And
some non-AMC's also
