Try running it with the water pump belt off, for enoug seconds to 
evaluate. I've got a increasingly noisy water pump, and it makes an 
oddly random rattly sound.

Is it a resonance, goes smoothly in and out with revs? Loose junk in the 
exhaust?

I hate those kind of noises.
