Good buy, Probably needs rings and or piston could even be burned.
Shoot oil in and recheck if the compression comes up more than a few pounds it points to rings.
No significantincrease could mean valves, but you usually can hear that.
It may be a head gasket blow between those two cylinders.
Any pressure leaking into cooling system?
NIT: 89 should have a 242 in it  [4.0L] unless it's been swapped out.
Build a cheap stroker for it or???

What engine? Sounds like a dirty throttle body/ IAC allowing the idle to come to low or bad.
IAC. Any SES light?
