I didn't catch the very beginnign of this thread, but doesn't anyone use a torch and scraper?  I do.  Works really well, to me.  Sure, when under the car you get a little bit on your hands, and it burns a little, but it gets the job done pretty quickly, I'm down to where a little sanding gets me bare metal, and move on.

Just 2 cents here.
