For a lot of people, a flat tappet cam is fine.  I think once a person experiences the difference a roller cam can make, that sells the technology more than the durability.  That said, even I would run a flat tappet cam on certain engines where cost is a factor.
 
This has prompted me to offer a special on a complete roller cam package.  The package will include:
 
1- Hydraulic roller cam
1- Set of hydraulic roller lifters
1- Anti-walk cam kit which includes mounting template, thrust plate set up, custom double roller timing chain and hardware 
1- set of roller cam double valve springs with dampeners
1- set of chrome molly hardened keepers and locks
1- set of 1 piece seamless chrome moly hardened push-rods (must specify length)
 
All for $1299.00.  Now consider all what you are getting in addition to just the cam and lifters. This is a considerable savings.

For the extra $1000.00 for the roller kit (from Crane or Comp cams) You won't see much in HP gains of efficiency, and here is still issues with the oils and you will also need an anti walk kit for your roller cam. that is another couple hundred bucks. 
  I would say just go with a good hydraulic cam and you will be more then happy. But then it's not my money and not my preference
