Not sure how quick of a gear set that can be had, but S-10's used a manual box that shared the power steering boxes dimensions. I'm pretty sure you can get a "quicker" ratios for them. Quick fix. Pop the high pressure line off the Hornet pump. Take out the Big nut [your familair with those now :] Under the big nut is a valve and spring. On one end of the valve is a little nut. Very carefully secure that valve in a vice, not on the machined lands of course. Take the little nut off. Under it will be a washer. Add a washer or too from another pumps valve. Old or new style pumps use the same valve and washer. This opens the bypass valve and reduces assist. You can experement to get the assist you want. Trade off is it is cheating and you can get box internals to do a better job of allowing road feel. I ran my American for years valved down to the point I had to goose the gas to get assist. never had a minutes problem. Now on my 4.0L swap I use a Wrangler valve in the Cherokee pump as it is factory valved to less pressure then a Cherokee. With my Wrangler valve feeding a 73 Hornet box I am happy with 3 1/4 turn Hornet box. I had intended to go to a quicker box, but, decided why mess with something that feels "right" for the car. I have 205/60/15s on front so that adds some resistance too. -- Mark Price Morgantown, WV 1969 AMC Rambler, 4.0L, EFI, T-5 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.7L, Quadratrc II " Chronic Pain Hurts" -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> > On Thu, 3 Apr 2008, Wrambler242@xxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > > > I'm not sure what car your wanting this for? > > I wasn't thinking of the little American, that'll stay pretty > much stock except for cosmetics or changes that make it reliable. > > I was thinking generally, as I drive my '70 hornet with the 2.5 > turn box, to work.
