Oh crap!!! I forgot there are two lengths!!!! Sorry!!! I have
both, but sounds like Frank got it.

I did look at the stud bolt (eg. battery ground and lifting). A
long bolt will function there otherwise.

I believe the longer ones are 4-1/4", but may be 4-1/2" -- only have a couple lying around and I know they are the short ones. Front left one should be a 6" stud from the factory, but a long bolt will work. It holds the oil fitler base, but don't torque the bolt over the filter base even with a spacer! Just use the one bolt to hold the filter bas on if you don't get a stud. It's safe to put the ground cable under a bolt, but I'd just mount the ground cable to a water pump or engine mount bolt instead.

The studs can be purchased from a fastener supply. Just make sure they are grade 8 equivalent -- all are standard coarse threads. Ford 289/302 uses 7/16" head bolts, and the 81-86 258. Not sure about lengths though. If you use standard bolt heads and not shoulder bolts (look like they have a washer made onto the head), use washers. Won't affect torque as long as you use grade 8 washers. Graded washers won't compress and are of uniform thickness.

You don't need more compression with that old engine anyway -- already has gobs of low speed torque, which is what compression helps more than anything else.
