A TBI system like the Howell or Holley would work well. I've toyed with the idea of using an older (early to mid 80s) 1V TBI from a GM 2.5L four on one. you just need to get the system from a 2.5L with TBI and distributor, not the later 80s distributorless system (like my 87 Pontiac 6000 had). Should be 82-86 (maybe 85?) cars, possibly up to 90 in S-10 pickups. Pull the TBI system and all sensors attached to the TBI wiring harness and the computer. Leave the distributor, it won't do you any good. It will run fine without the special distributor, just won't control timing, of course. The engine light (if you connect one!) will probably stay on since the distro isn't connected, but it will control fuel just fine. A fellow put a GM TBI 2V system on a 258 with the distributor unconnected and it performed just fine -- much better than a carb.

Its a wonder I am not more insane than I am currently... anyway what is your opinions on putting fuel injection on either of the 196's?  I have heard some talk of this with the couch potato motorheads (like a sofa quarterback) I work with.  I am not planning to do this, but am interested in the topic in general.  I have seen it done on a 60's Charger but don't remember any of the details.
